The Beginning
The origins of Jebsen Group trace back to 1929 when Kristian Stange Jebsen established Kristian Jebsens Rederi AS (KJR) in Bergen, Norway. Beginning with two steamships operating in the North Sea, KJR laid the foundation for what would become a significant international maritime enterprise.
Rebuilding and Growth
Following the losses suffered during the Second World War, the company rebuilt its operations and expanded into dry cargo and tanker shipping activities. The postwar years established the foundation for future growth and international expansion.
The Atle Jebsen Era
Following the passing of Kristian Jebsen in 1967, leadership of the family enterprise passed to Atle Jebsen. Under his leadership, the organization expanded internationally, pursued strategic acquisitions and partnerships, and developed long term industrial shipping relationships that ultimately formed what became known as the Jebsen Group. Atle Jebsen also emerged as one of the most influential figures in international shipping through leadership roles within major maritime organizations and industry bodies.
Global Expansion
During the 1970s and beyond, the Group expanded its activities across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific markets. This period established Jebsen as a truly international maritime organization serving customers and industries across multiple regions.
Beyond Ship Ownership
As the shipping industry changed, so did the Group, moving beyond owning ships into a wider set of maritime activities.
The Current Generation
Leadership transitioned to Bjørn Jebsen during the early 2000s, continuing the tradition of active family ownership and long term commitment to maritime enterprise. Today, the Group remains committed to the principles that have guided it since 1929.
Looking Ahead
While proud of its history, Jebsen Group remains focused on the future. The responsibility of every generation is not merely to preserve a legacy, but to strengthen it for those who follow.
